Audrey Large graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven’s MA in Social Design in 2017 and later joined the Jan van Eyck Academie’s residency program. Her work moves fluidly between object design and digital sculpting, reimagining the very tools and gestures by which materials are formed. Large produces most of her sculptures herself, surrounded by blinking machines and moving parts. Her studio, a mix of maker space, illustration atelier and computer lab, feels like a miniature robot farm.
Join us on a studio visit to Audrey Large, a French designer based in Rotterdam (NL), whose work unfolds at the intersection of drawing, digital image, and material research. In working on things, we visit creatives in their studios, ateliers, or workspaces to understand how they shape their surroundings—and how those surroundings shape their ways of thinking, seeing, and making in return.
A constant humming fills the space. A pioneering figure in the use of 3D printing as a tool for artistic expression, Large’s practice has become almost synonymous with digital aesthetics. She was among the earliest designers to embrace 3D printing not just as a means of production, but as a conceptual framework for thinking about form, surface, and perception. Contrary to what one might assume from her futuristic-looking objects, her process always begins with analogue drawing. From these 2D sketches, Large transitions into a three-dimensional digital realm using VR sculpting and drawing techniques. The final objects that emerge from this process re-enter the physical world through 3D printing. Look closely, and you’ll still see the traces of the original drawing embedded in the forms. We visited her in February 2025 at her studio in Rotterdam. Production & Editing the thing Magazine Sound Nctrnm studioaudreylarge.com instagram.com/audreylrg
