The reader “Positions on Freedom. Design and its Boundaries” brings together essays and conversations by contemporary design theorists and practitioners. It addresses topics such as racism in design, freedom in education, as well as the connections between ableism or democracy and design.
This reader accompanies the exhibition “Positions on Freedom. Design and Its Boundaries”, presented at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, in May 2026. Positions on Freedom does not propose a fixed perspective, but rather a method. Through various elements within the exhibition, as well as the texts in this reader, the intersections of freedom and design are explored. The aim is not to arrive at a fixed definition of these intersections, but to offer an impression of (current) understandings and approaches to these topics. A digital version of the exhibition can be accessed at: www.thethingfellowship.com
The reader can be purchased the thing Gallery.
Contributors include: Anoe Melliou and Anne-Lise Agossa, Anton Rahlwes, Antônio Frederico Lasalvia, Barbara Lersch, Charlotte Rohde, Djamal Elangui Okoko, Inga Krumme and Jamer Hunt, Kelly Walters, Mara Recklies, Mio Kojima, Serena Dokuaa, and Vera Sacchetti.
The exhibition and this reader are part of the World Design Capital 2026. Published in the context of the thing Fellowship, an initiative by the thing Magazine. Made possible through the support of the Fondation USM.
